The Pine Barrens

The Pine Barrens region of New Jersey gets its name from the predominant tree species found there. The acidic, sandy soil of the area is not well suited to many other trees, and early settlers discovered the farming in the area was poor, which was the main factor that kept it relatively wild. This unique soil does support some unusual plant communities, though, including carnivorous plants and orchids. Species in the Pine Barrens have adapted to periodic fires, which are frequent and are fueled in intensity by the pine pitch.

Despite its proximity to so many large cities, enough of the Pine Barrens remained undeveloped or lightly populated rural countryside that the Pinelands National Reserve, the nation’s first national reserve, was designated here in 1978. This reserve protects 1.1 million acres of the Pine Barrens, and has since been upgraded to an International Biosphere Reserve. The reserve contains three state forests: Wharton, Bass River, and Brendan T. Byrne. These state forests are connected by the Bartona Trail, a 49.5-mile trail that winds through the barrens. A network of shorter trails branch off into many of the most remote areas, opening up many options for bugging out on foot. Fire roads and logging roads offer access in to the area by bike, motorcycle or ATV or four-wheel-drive vehicle. Game animals such as deer and squirrel are plentiful, as are wild berries such as blueberries, strawberries, and cranberries.
